Dell unveils U2518D 25-inch HDR display

With fake HDR

Dell has expanded its UltraSharp series with a 25-inch model that features 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolution. Furthermore the monitor comes with an IPS panel and it’s supposed to be HDR compatible. According to Dell the display covers 99 percent of the Adobe RGB and sRGB color spectrum and a few other color standards.

As we already mentioned the U2518D monitor has been equipped with a 25-inch panel offering 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. On the connector side of things we find one DisplayPort 1.2 as well as a mini-DisplayPort 1.2 connector, one HDMI 2.0 port and one DisplayPort 1.2 out for MST daisy chaining. Dell is marketing this display for content creators and the fact that the IPS panel covers 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color spectrum is certainly a commitment into that direction.

Since this isn't a gaming monitor, you won’t find support for either FreeSync or G-Sync. On top of the convincing specs there is a very well-built aluminum frame, which allows for pan, tilt, swivel and height adjustment. Furthermore it is compatible with 100 x 100mm VESA mounts making this display ideal for multi-monitor configurations if required. The Dell U2518D should be available soon via Dell’s official online store for $499 US.

According to Dell, this display comes with "Dell HDR" technology. This eye-catching name is merely a simulation. While the standard HDR take advantage of HDR10 content, Dell’s HDR system does not adhere to any common HDR standards. A typical HDR display hits 1'000 cd/m2 brightness, while the Dell U2518D only achieves 350 cd/m2 maximum brightness which for HDR is too low. Furthermore, HDR10 uses the Rec2020 color gamut while the Dell U2518D comes with an older version. The Dell U2518D might be a good display, however the HDR spec is fake.
