Intel Core i7-8700K Coffee Lake detailed

Still compatible with socket LGA1151

Judging by the sheer number of rumors, that are surfacing these days regarding the upcoming Intel mainstream desktop processors, we’re closing in on the launch of these new parts. This time it’s an asian website leaking information including clock speeds, TDPs and core count. The CPU-Z screenshot shows that the processors is still based on the socket LGA1151.

The screenshot shows the flagship Core i7-8700K. According to CPU-Z, the upcoming high-end processor will feature six cores and twelve threads with a base clock of 3.5GHz. This chip will come with 12MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 80W. One of the most interesting bits of information is the fact, that the Turbo frequency that is set to 4.3GHz. Since the CPU features six core we didn't expect clock speeds well beyond 4 GHz. According to a leak from last week, Intel might also release a non-K version of this chip, which is allegedly supposed to run at 3.2GHz base clock, which would be significantly less than what appears to be planned for the K-series chip.

Furthermore Intel might release two Core i5 processors with six cores. The first one is supposed to be called Core i5-8600K, it packs 9MB of L3 cache and a base clock speed of 3.6GHz. Additionally there should also be a the i5-8600 processor clocking at 2.8GHz, which is quite a bit less than the K-model. Both CPUs lack Hyperthreading. In terms of performance the upcoming i7 processors should be quicker than Intel’s Core i7 Haswell-E six core chips. Compared to Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake processors come with lower clock speeds, which means that these CPUs might deliver a little less performance when it comes to applications which benefit from one core only.
