During the past few days there were rumors that Micron had to shut down their Fab-2. According to the rumors, the production had to be stopped after a major incident, where wafers and equipment were contaminated. In a statement Micron mentioned that this hiccup hasn’t had an impact on the actual production.


If you were looking for new DRAM for your rig during the past months, you might have noticed that prices were on the rise continuously. DRAM prices are higher than usual due to supply constraints, which are occurring because the lastest high-end smartphones can require up to 6 Gigabyte of DRAM. Although Samsung, SK Hynix and the likes are continuously increasing their production capacity it still takes time until the increased demand for DRAM can be met. Micron’s Fab-2 is said to produce about 5.5% of the world's DRAM, which is a significant amount.

However according to Micron, the incident wasn't related to the rumored Nitrogen leak and the production has been recovered quickly with no damage to wafers in production or to the equipment. In other words, all the reports of the event harming the DRAM production line were simply false.

According to recent reports, the overall supply situation is supposed to get better by the beginning of 2018. But even if the situation gets better a sharp decline in prices for end customers can’t be expected.
