AMD announces Vega Frontier Edition prices

Higher than expected

Our friends over at ComputerBase have mentioned the prices of the the Vega Frontier Edition graphics cards from AMD. These new cards are undoubtedly amongst the most anticipated products this year and AMD appears to have prepared an air cooled as well as a water cooled version.

As you might know, AMD is going to offer two different Vega cards. The first one will feature an air cooler while the second one comes with a water cooler with single radiator, similar to the Fury X. According to the latest rumors, the air-cooled Frontier Edition card will cost $999 US excluding taxes, while the liquid cooled version is to feature a whopping $1499 US price tag, excluding taxes as well. Those prices are pretty close to what could be spotted on a few UK retail shops a few weeks ago.

At a first glance the prices of these cards appear to be ridiculously high. Nevertheless as we reported yesterday, based on an article from PCWorld, both these cards are not targeted at gamers but at professionals such as game developers. In that regard the card is quite a bit cheaper than a comparable Quadro accelerator from NVIDIA and the compute performance appears to be higher than what the Titan Xp has to offer. Therefore, at least from a professional’s perspective, the Radeon Pro Vega Frontier Edition could hit a sweet spot. Especially keeping game designers in mind AMD allows them to switch between to a gaming mode in the Radeon Pro settings, which might be a nifty little feature for this particular group of customers.
