With one of the biggest “innovations” of the past years being RGB lighting we here at ocaholic, and we’d guess you out there as well, have developed a certain numbness towards product announcements. This is especially true when we’re looking at gaming peripherals. Nevertheless, today appears to be one of those very rare days to be surprised.
With their G PowerPlay Logitech launches a mouse mat that acts as a wireless charger. The idea itself appears to be pretty simple and when thinking about it for a second the question arises, why this is such a big deal. There’s already the Qi standard for wireless charging, so why not just go ahead and implement this into a mouse mat? The problem with Qi, as demonstrated by Corsair’s project Zeus, is that it doesn’t cover the entire area a standard mouse mat offers.
According to Logitech they’ve spent four years developing a proprietary solution to this problem, which at this point in time appears to be ready for the masses. Logitech’s PowerPlay technology is capable of covering the full area of your standard mouse mat. Apart from that it can be combined with soft and hard surfaces.
As you might know from wirelessly charging your smartphone this process usually requires significantly more time than charging your phone with a cable. Logitech has to deal with these same constraints as well. If you want to fully charge your wireless Logitech gaming mouse plugging in a USB cable it would take 2 hours, while wirelessly charging it via the mouse mat would require 14 hours. Nevertheless this is not to a deal breaker, since you’ll never get to the point where the mouse burns more energy than it receives from the mouse pad. Therefore it won’t be necessary anymore to recharge your wireless mouse using a USB cable. Apparently it could now be argued/trolled that one might leave the mouse on and somewhere other on the table than on the mouse mat. Well, as we pointed out, this would be trolling and so to say simply ridiculous.
Alongside of launching their G PowerPlay mouse mats the company also hints to two gaming mice that support wireless charging. One of them is the G903, which is basically a G900 with wireless charging capabilities. The other is the G703, which is based on the G403 also adding wireless charging functionality. While these mice set you back $149 US and $99 US respectively, the G PowerPlay mouse mat will cost an additional $99 US and it’s slated to become available in August.
