One of the most popular music streaming apps, Spotify, is a silent killer of solid state drives as it writes a massive amount of junk data, even when it is in idle.
It appears that the issue has been present for almost five months with plenty of reports on Reddit, Hacker News and even on Spotify forums, where the app is writing hundreds and even thousands of gigabytes of unknown data to a drive which is a big problem for drives, especially SSDs, as it shortens the the life expectancy of the drive.
The reports suggest that the Spotify is able to write from 5 to 10GB in less than an hour and some reports that we saw mention terabytes of data.
This is a major bug, especially if you are running your system on SSD so you might want to disable it, at least until Spotify fixes the problem.
There are reports that Spotify has already released a new 1.0.42 version that should be fixing this problem.
