AMD AM4 socket pictured up close

Packs 1331 pins

AMD AM4 socket has been pictured up close, showing a total of 1331 pins, which is a significant increase compared to the AM3+ socket.

Meant to fit both AMD's upcoming Summit Ridge desktop CPUs based on Zen CPU architecture as well as the future 7th generation Bristol Ridge APUs, the new AMD AM4 socket will feature 1331 pins, or rather pin holes, since AMD will stick to its PGA (Pin Grid Array) design.

The 1331 PGA design means that AMD has significantly increased the number of pins compared to its older AM3+ socket, raising it by over 40 percent, from 942 pins to 1331.

AMD's socket AM4 motherboards are expected to show up together with AMD's first Zen-based Summit Ridge CPUs early next year, most likely around CES 2017 show in January.
