Western Digital announce WD Gold HDDs

Aimed at datacenter servers

Western Digital has expanded its line of hard disk drives to include a completely new WD Gold Series of HDDs designed for small- to medium-scale enterprise servers and rack-mount datacent servers and storage enclosures.

Designed specifically for datacenter servers, the new WD Gold line features high-capacity configurations of up to 8TB with HelioSeal helium-technology for performance as well as high power efficiency and low power consumption, which is ideal for datacenter environments.

According to Western Digital, the new WD Gold line offers up to 18 percent higher sequential performance compared to previous generation WD Re 4TB datacenter drives and up to 30 percent improvement in random write compared to the WD Re 6TB datacenter drivers. It also raises the power efficiency by up to 15 percent while HelioSeal technology provides up to 16 percent lower power consumption.

The new WD Gold line will offer one of the highest reliability ratings in the industry, with 2.5 million hours MTBF on the 8TB version.
