Custom cylindrical Dune Case hits Kickstarter

In case you want a Mac Pro clone

Cylindrical cases are slowly becoming quite popular and while the trend started with Apple's Mac Pro, thanks to the newest Kickstarter campaign, you can get a neat custom cylindrical PC case, called Dune Case, for about US $160.

According to details at Kickstarter, the Dune Case is smaller than the average PC case but also big in customization potential. It uses the same cylindrical design as the Mac Pro and the recently unveiled MSI Vortex gaming PC, where all components are placed in a cylindrical enclosure with a top mounted fan.

The precise dimensions of the Dune Case are set at 260x215x215mm and it weighs 2.6kg. It supports mini-ITX motherboards and SFX power supplies, as well as up to 185mm long GPUs. It also has support for two 2.5-inch drives. The entire case is made of aluminum and it will be available in two color choices, Metallic Black and Gold.

It also comes with four USB 3.0 ports, two 3.5mm audio jacks, Ethernet and two HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 ports at the back. This is important since you won't be actually using the back ports on the motherboard, which is kinda a drawback since some of the best mini-ITX have integrated WiFi and other ports that you might want to use. We are also puzzled to see where the graphics card outputs are located (looks like at the top) and whether you can use them or have to route them to those outputs located at the back of the case.

The idea is that the PSU should draw cold air from the bottom, while the top mounted, and included, 140mm case fan should get rid of the hot air. As the graphics card is mounted vertically, it should automatically get rid of the hot air at the top.

Unfortunately, project needs US $130,000 and it only raised about half of the money with only 14 days to go so it is still not clear if the project will succeed.
