Asetek has sent out cease and desist letters to both AMD and Gigabyte demanding that AMD stop selling its Radeon R9 Fury X and Gigabyte to stop selling its GTX 980 Waterforce.
Asetek already sued Cooler Master back in 2014 and has recently
announced that it had won injunction against Cooler Master for its patented liquid cooling pump/block design which already suggested that certain AMD Radeon Fury series graphics card could be in trouble.
A similar Cooler Master liquid cooling solution based on a pump/block design is used in both AMD Radeon Fury X as well as Gigabyte's GTX 980 Waterforce graphics cards which allowed Asetek to demand from these companies to stop selling these products.
In a press statement for Gamersnexus.net, Asetek said that its attorneys have sent cease and desist letters to Gigabyte for its GTX 980 Waterforce as it features Cooler Master's Seidon 120M cooler as well as AMD as the liquid cooling solution on R9 Fury X infringes Asetek's patents, The same thing could be happening to Gigabyte's GTX 980 Ti Extreme Waterforce, although Asetek had trouble obtaining it.
This will also extend to any graphics cards from Gigabyte that pack the same liquid cooling solution, forcing Gigabyte to pull more graphics cards or switch to a different liquid cooling system.
AMD just managed to get a healthy supply of Radeon R9 Fury X graphics cards on the market so this will be quite a hit for AMD in case it does not manage to sort out some kind of a deal with Asetek.
