While we already knew that at least Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 should be enough to run the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset, it appears that these graphics cards are both minimum and recommended, since the Geforce GTX 970 will be able to run every single piece of software that Oculus will offer when Rift launches.
According to a Reddit thread, where a user asked about future-proofing his system for next-generation Oculus Rift VR headsets, considering either the GTX 970 or going for the GTX 980 Ti, a Oculus VR employee noted that "a consumer owning a GTX 970 will be able to play everything on our store."
Of course, this does not say anything about future Oculus Rift VR headsets and upcoming Nvidia Pascal and Arctic Islands GPUs but it still confirms that the recently release recommended specifications for Oculus Rift VR headset are both recommended and minimum since it would be bad to have a graphics card than can't run some things on the Oculus Rift VR headset.
In case you missed it earlier, Oculus has revealed that you would need at least Intel Core i5-4590 equivalent or better CPU, 8GB+ of RAM, Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 graphics card, compatible HDMI 1.3 output, two USB 3.0 ports and Windows 7 SP1 or newer OS.
Earlier, Oculus VR Palmer Luckey revealed that the final version of the Oculus Rift VR headset could cost north of US $350 when it becomes available. This makes it a rather pricey accessory but it will offer plenty of new features that were not seen with DK1 and DK2 versions of the headset.
The time of VR gaming is certainly coming and it looks like you'll need a decent system in order to try it out.
