MWC 2014: Samsung finally unveils the new Galaxy S5

Not a big jump from Galaxy S4

During its last night Unpacked 5 event at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, Samsung has finally and officially unveiled its newest flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5. Based around a 5.1-inch 1080p screen and featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with 2GB of RAM, the Galaxy S5 turned out to be a less of a surprise for everyone, including Samsung Galaxy fans.

As noted, the new Samsung Galaxy S5 features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen with 1920x1080 resolution and runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 SoC paired up with 2GB of RAM. The IP67 certification is probably the biggest surprise and fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor are not that bad either. The rear snapper got an update to 16-megapixel and it has an ability to shoot UHD 3840x2160 videos.

Design-wise, the new Galaxy S5 does not come with any drastic solutions and although it is quite different than the "stitched leather" look we have seen on the Galaxy Note 3, the "perforated" rear pattern is not exactly an impressive solution. The precise dimensions of the Galaxy S5 are set at 42x72.5x8.1mm, which makes it a tad bit taller and wider than the Galaxy S4 and at 145g it is also heavier than the Galaxy S4.

As noted, the Galaxy S5 is based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 SoC, which is practically what most flagship will use from now on. The Snapdragon 805 brings 14 percent faster quad-core Krait 400 CPU part, 28 percent faster Adreno 330 GPU part, and most importantly, 45 percent improvement in camera sensor processing speed, which should bode well for the the 16-megapixel rear snapper on the Galaxy S5.

The rest of the features include a 2800mAh battery, 802.11ac WiFi, USB 3.0, IR, NFC and 150Mbps LTE-A support. It runs on Android 4.2.2 KitKat with Samsung's own new TouchWiz on top of it.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy S5 is expected to hit global market on April 11th and while pricing will heavily depend on the region and carriers, the expected price is somewhere at €600 without contract and around €200 on contract.
