Apple has also officially unveiled the fifth generation 9.7-inch iPad, the iPad Air. According to Apple, thanks to the A7 chip we have seen in the new iPhone 5S, Apple managed to slim down the bezel, make the new iPad thinner and even lighter.
Thanks to the A7 chip that we have seen in the new iPhone 5S, the new iPad Air runs on "64-bit desktop class architecture" and features twice the amount of general purpose registers, two times more floating point registers and 1 billion transistors as well as the so called, M7 motion co-processor. According to Apple, it is up to 8x faster than the first generation iPad while the GPU is up to 72 times faster. It also features new MIMO technology that should get a better WiFi as well as an expanded LTE support.
As noted earlier, Apple managed to slim down the bezel by 43 percent, makes it a mere 7.5mm thin (or thick) and lighten it down to a single pound, or 454g. Built around a 9.7-inch IPS LCD 2048x1536 Retina screen, the new iPad Air also comes with 5-megapixel camera, dual microphones, front FaceTime HD camera and quite surprisingly, lacks the Touch ID.
It will be available in Space Grey/Black and Silver/White color combinations, WiFi and 4G versions as well as storage capacities from 16 to 128GB. The WiFi version starts at $499 and goes up to $799 while the 4G one starts at US $629 for the 16GB and climbs up to US $929 for the 128GB one.
The new iPad Air definitely looks good and kudos to Apple for managing to slim down what was already quite a slim and elegant tablet.
