In an interview with Forbes, VP and General Manager of AMD's Graphics Business Unit, Matt Skynner talked a lot about everything including the upcoming Volcanic Islands new graphics cards, next-gen consoles and the criticism that AMD received about the HD 7990. Most important part of the interview are some details regarding the upcoming next-gen graphics cards that will be quite a surprise, according to Matt Skynner.
According to the interview, the upcoming Volcanic Series might end up cheaper than what many people expected and AMD will not be aiming at US $999 for the single GPU solution, as seen like the competition, but might again go the same way by offering a dual-GPU solution for ultra-enthusiast segment of the market. Matt also revealed that the upcoming lineup will launch at some point in Q4 this year and will be extremely efficient. He also noted that GK110 is nearly 30 percent bigger from a die size point of view and if AMD manages to go directly against it, performance-wise, than it might have a great winner on its hands.
He also confirmed that the new lineup is still, as expected, made in 28nm manufacturing process, simply due to the fact that 20nm will not be ready in time and, according to Matt, can achieve higher clock speeds and higher absolute performance. Not wanting to add any comments on the upcoming Battlefield 4 bundle Matt Skynner only noted that AMD is the Battlefield 4 hardware partner for APUs, CPUs and GPUs.
In any case, we will know for sure on 25th of September when AMD will hold a press event in Hawaii.
