As expected, AMD has lifted the NDA for its new dual-GPU flagship Radeon HD 7990 Malta graphics card. Based on two 28nm Tahiti GPUs, the new HD 7990 Malta has lower power draw and an impressive cooler when compared to the dual-GPU HD 7990 New Zealand graphics card previously released by some partners.
The new AMD Radeon HD 7990 Malta comes with two fully enabled 28nm Tahiti GPUs which means that we are looking at a total of 4096 stream processors, 256 TMUs, 64 ROPs and 3GB of GDDR5 memory for each GPU paired up with dual 384-bit memory interface. The GPU works at reference 950MHz with 1GHz Boost while memory ended up clocked at 6GHz. In order to make those two GPUs to talk in Crossfire mode, AMD opted for PLX PEX8747 48-lane PCI-Express 3.0 bridge chip.
As noted earlier, the new Radeon HD 7990 Malta has much lower power draw when compared to earlier dual-GPU HD 7990 New Zealand graphics card so it "only" needs two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors. The reference version features a quite good dual-slot, triple-fan cooler that keeps those two GPUs well cooled while maintaining reasonable noise levels. It comes with four DisplayPort and single dual-link DVI outputs.
In order to make it a bit more appealing to those with deeper pockets, AMD bundles the Radeon HD 7990 Malta with no less than eight free games, including Crysis 3 Hunter Edition, Bioshock: Infinite, Tomb Raider, Hitman Absolution, Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Deus Ex: Human Evolution, and Sleeping Dogs titles.
Unfortunately, those two GPUs and flagship performance come with a flagship price as well placing the AMD Radeon HD 7990 Malta on par with the dual-GPU Nvidia GTX 690 graphics card at US $999.
