Toshiba has unveiled a new SSD product that should sit in a sweet spot in consumer demand. The manufacturer describes the SSD as "value optimised" and it should sits between SATA6 and enthusiast NVMe SSDs. Toshiba's RC100 Series M.2 SSDs will be available in 22x42mm form factor.

With the RC100, Toshiba unveils a M.2 SSD that packs 3-bit-per-cell TLC BiCS Flash memory and an in-house SSD controller in a single package. In order to keep the price low, Toshiba has removed any DRAM buffer. This drive is going to be available with 120GB, 240GB and 480GB capacity. Performance wise, sequentially reading these drives should achieve up to 1'620MB/s and 1'130MB/s in the case of sequential writes.

The random read and write IOPS are set to 160K and 120K respectively. Those values are roughly two to three times faster than a SATA SSD drive. So far Toshiba has not revealed any details on pricing and availability regarding their upcoming SSDs. According to latest rumors, the pricing of the 480GB model should be below $200.
