Over the last couple of months, there have been whispers regarding an additional Intel chipset and new CPU coming after Coffee Lake and Z370. Today the first Z390 motherboard seems to have made an appearance online. According to the latest rumors, Intel Z390 chipset should be compatible with 8-core processors.
The roadmap shows that Coffee Lake-S should be available for early 2018 and will include new processors with 6-, 4- and 2-core. Previously a user on Eurocom forum has shared some more details on this chipset. One of their users has mentioned that the Z390 chipset is designed to support CPUs with up to 8-cores. In order words, Intel might release a mainstream 8-cores processors based on Coffee Lake or Ice Lake somewhen in the first or second half of 2018. This is a pretty interesting detail and it will certainly be great to find Intel 8-core chips making it into the mainstream market.
AMD should be already working on Ryzen Zen+ refresh which is expected for 2018. Intel with Z390 and Coffee Lake-S may be planned as direct competition to that. Meanwhile the current Coffee Lake series is intended to fight the current iteration of Ryzen. Due to all these leaks, it looks like 2018 is going to be very interesting.
