Intel is announcing it’s first so called neuromorphic processor. The chip is still in the testing phase and it's been designed for help solving specific problems in physics and biology. According to Intel, Loihi should be highly energy efficient chip. In fact, the chip is supposed to be up to 1000 times more efficient than a general purpose computer chip.
Intel Loihi is supposed to be suitable for analyzing unstructured data. Over time the chip will use the data gathered to learn and adapt to different problems to solve. Intel claims that Loihi raises the bar for AI. At the moment Loihi is only a prototype or a 'test chip' but it’s already claimed to offer a wide range of useful actions.
Intel will share working samples with leading university and research institutions starting from H1 2018. The chip will pack several a mesh core design and a learning engine, which can be programmed. Intel is going to produce this chip with 14nm process technology like current Coffee Lake generation.
