A few weeks ago we’ve found out that Intel's upcoming Coffee Lake processors won’t work on Intel 200 series motherboards. The same incompatibility is between Kaby Lake processors and the upcoming Intel Z300 motherboards. A few days ago, our friends over at hardware.info have tested both combinations and according to them, the Intel 200 series is incompatible with the 300 series.
The image below clearly indicates that Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake processors use the same LGA 1151 pin count with both CPUs fitting into Z270 and Z370 motherboards. Hardware.info confirmed that the upcoming CPUs are not compatible with Kaby Lake motherboards, however they didn't mention any hardware that has been used in order to protect the vendor from any backlash from Intel.
According to their tests, the systems are able to power on and do a quick incomplete boot. Both systems can't complete a boot or even access the BIOS. While Intel hasn't said a word about these compatibility differences, it looks like the differences in the micro-architecture are read-out differently depending on the motherboard.
