On reddit, user ingebor has posted alleged sales number of AMD processors versus chips from Intel. According to him the sales numbers come from German e-tailer Mindfactory. What they actually show is that - if correct - AMD Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper sales have overtaking sales of Intel mainstream processors. To put the size of Mindfactory.de in perspective, it could be called the “German Newegg”.
Thanks to the latest discounts on AMD Ryzen CPUs and to the aggressive pricing on the entire Ryzen Threadripper lineup, AMD is selling their CPU incredibly well - it seems. For example the 16-cores 32-threads Ryzen Threadripper CPU can be bought for a very reasonable - in relation to Intel’s offerings - $999 US. This is an insane price when compared to Intel’s high-end series. Back in March 2017, AMD held only 27,6% market share regarding the desktop CPUs but already by July the company had reached a huge 49%.
The best-seller Ryzen CPU seems to be the Ryzen 5 1600, which packs 6-cores and 12-threads with a price of $220 US. The Ryzen 7 1700, Ryzen 5 1600X and Ryzen 7 1700X are on second, third and fourth places respectively. The best-seller processor from Intel is the Core i7-7700K, which is Intel’s high-end mainstream quad-core with Hyperthreading and unlocked multiplier.
If this information is correct, AMD appears to be covering ground on Intel very quickly thanks to their new Ryzen as well as Threadripper processors. Meanwhile Intel is still pushing their Core i9 chips and soon Coffee Lake is supposed to launch.
