We have covered sofos1990 breaking records in the past and apparently the Greek overclocker did it again. This time he pushed an Intel Core i9-7960X CPU to 5.40 GHz using a Gigabyte X299 SOC Champion motherboard and liquid nitrogen cooling. The clock speed was achieved running 102 MHz BCLK and a multiplier of 54. Keep in mind that the scores done on Geekbench v3 and on Geekbench v4 are not comparable on a 1 to 1 basis.
As we mentioned before, the system was based on a Gigabyte X299 SOC Champion motherboard and an Intel Core i9-7960X CPU, which was pushed to 5.40 GHz at 1.52v. Alongside of that a set of G.Skill memory was set to work at 3270MHz and CL13 timings. Running these clock speeds the system achieved 5'882 points in single-core and 81'005 points in multi-core. This the highest score that’s been realized with any 16-core CPU so far, outperforming the Ryzen Threaripper 1950X record of 79'144 points by quite a margin. We expect to see even even higher clock speeds from other overclockers soon.
So far the Intel Core i9-7960X is one of the more powerful i9 model that’s available. In the end the entire Skylake-X family is going to features 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 core SKUs, while we’re still waiting for the 18 core chip. According to the latest rumors, the 18 core version should be called i9-7980XE and it will be available after summer.
