It looks like Intel is working hard lately. At the moment we are waiting for Kaby Lake-X and Skylake-X which should be released soon and after that Coffee lake seems to be knocking on the door already. According to Intel, Cannon Lake is on track and Ice Lake has taped in as well. Ice Lake will be the second generation of 10nm processors while Cannon Lake will be the first.
According to Intel's Twitter feed they are not only working on 10nm Cannon Lake but also on Ice Lake. So far the design has been taped-in, which is basically the second to last step in production, where the first batch of test wafers are being manufactured.
The final production of Cannon Lake is supposed to start later this year and the first 10nm processor will be available in early 2018. At the moment this appears to be Intel’s roadmap. For Intel being able to produce 10nm chips is yet another milestone. At this point in time we hope that we’re not going to see delays like with Skylake, and the 14nm node process for that matter, where Intel had to further refine the process to achieve high enough yields.
The first Cannon Lake chips which are to be launched are the -U and -Y series pieces of silicon for laptops. After that, in the second half of 2018, the 10nm Ice Lake desktop CPUs ares supposed to hit the market. In the meantime Intel should launch Coffee Lake, which is basically the successor of Kaby Lake and it will still be using the 14nm process node.
According to the latest rumors Coffee Lake could already make it to market in August or September 2017 and the lineup is supposed to feature quad core and six core desktop processors. Coffee Lake could be up to 15% faster than Kaby Lake - if we believe the latest rumors - and it will be seated on the upcoming H370 and Z370 chipsets.
