It looks like AMD and Intel are ready to compete head to head with high-end desktop platforms at this year’s Computex. During the show, ASRock has unveiled the first two AMD X399 motherboards which are compatible with the upcoming AMD Threadripper processors. With the X399 chipset, AMD uses the so called socket SP3r2 LGA (Land Grid Array).
Today we have a look at ASRock's new X399 Taichi and X399 Professional Gaming motherboards, which pack the new AMD TR4 socket, eight DDR4 DIMM slots and several new features. On the storage side for example, both models feature a single U.2 port, three Ultra M.2 slots and eight angled SATA ports. Furthermore there are four full-sized PCIe slots with steel reinforcements and one PCIe x1 slot.
At the moment we have only one picture available but we might add more during the next days. According to the first rumors, the X399 Professional Gaming will feature at least one 10 Gigabit Ethernet port while the X399 Taichi will “only” pack a standard Intel Gigabit Ethernet connection. So far ASRock has not announced the official pricing of these motherboards or their release date.
In a little bit another context, we’re really hoping that AMD is going to shed some more light on the upcoming Threadripper chips such as pricing and maybe even release date.
