AMD has released new AGESA Microcode for their Ryzen CPUs which should further improve memory compatibility on their AM4 platform. According to a Gigabyte employee, the new microcode should enhance memory compatibility in combination with high clocked memory, adding support to 20 different high-end memory kits.
AMD's Generic Encapsulated Software Architecture (AGESA), is a protocol that is used on AMD64 motherboards to initialise the system. This code is initializing the CPU cores, memory interface and HyperTransport controllers. So far it’s being expected that the updated microcode could help improving memory compatibility. Compared to the what’s possible with Intel processors AMD’s AM4 platform still requires a lot of additional tweaking to catch up in the memory department.
As with other updates before, this one will also be rolled out by the motherboard vendors in the shape of UEFI/BIOS updates. Therefore you’ll simply have to download the latest BIOS from the manufacturer’s website and flash it to your motherboard.
According to the Gigabyte employee, the manufacturer will add support for 20 memory kits. Back in April, AMD had already released their AGESA 1.0.0.4a update which brought slightly better performance, lower memory latency and quicker boot up (post) times. Since the new AGESA microcode is in the works, we expect to soon see the first beta BIOS from Gigabyte and other vendors.
