According to a new report from IDC, 2016 has been a good year for Toshiba's storage division. The company reports growth in revenue, units sold and market share regarding hard disks as well as solid-state drives. According to Toshiba themselves, they’ve grown faster than any other storage vendor.
Toshiba's HDD unit was particularly successful in 2016. According to the IDC’s “Worldwide 4Q16 HDD Shipment Results and Fourth-Quarter Forecast Update” report, the market share increased to 15% in 2015 and to 24% in 2016, which led to $25 billion US. In 2016, Toshiba was the only HDD manufacturer to see an increase in revenue. Furthermore the company's SSD units also had a good year showing strong growth. According to the IDC “Worldwide Solid State Storage Quarterly Update, CY Q4 2016”, Toshiba's SSD market share increased by 114% in 2016 making the company the fourth largest manufacturer with $17 billion US of revenue from their SSD business alone.
So far 2017 is looking promising as well. According to IDG’s Research VPs, John Rydning and Jeff Janukowicz, the launch of new HDDs and SSDs should bring further growth to Toshiba’s HDD and SSD business in 2017. Future plans for Toshiba's storage division and its SSD unit rely on the success of the latest manufacturing plant and R&D center. The plant will produce scalable 3D NAND flash memory. The construction is set to finish during summer of 2018.
