A few months ago, it was reported that Intel might license AMD's iGPU technology to Intel for integration into its future processors. HardOCP's Kyle Bennet made those rumors appear in May last year reporting that Intel and AMD’s Radeon Technology Group were talking about supplying iGPUs for future Intel CPUs.


Although this rumor was disregarded by most people, Intel in the meantime reduced its workforce in the graphics division by 11%, which would certainly make designing a competitive iGPU increasingly difficult. If we were to believe the latest rumors Intel might really release CPUs with an AMD GPU integrated in late 2017. Therefore reducing the workforce happened alongside a move to discontinue or at least remove priority from the development of their own integrated graphics units. For AMD this would mean that their market share in the consumer segment would go up significantly.

The current A10-7890K flagship APU, codenamed Godavari, comes with CPU cores that are based on the Steamroller architecture. Apart from that there is an integrated Radeon R7 series iGPU which is quite a bit faster than Intel’s HD630, which you can find inside the Intel Core i7-7700K. So far the Iris Pro Graphics 6200 is Intel’s most powerful iGPU. You can only find this logic inside the Broadwell Core i7-5775-C chip, which is a notebook processor. Maybe due to cost reasons Intel has not added the Iris Pro Graphics 6200 iGPU to their Kaby Lake silicon.
