Samsung to launch 4TB 850 Pro SSD at CES 2017

It appears that Samsung is going to launch a 4 Terabyte version of their 850 Pro during the upcoming CES January next year. After having having released the 850 Evo back in July the world’s largest SSD supplier is going expand the portfolio of its 850 Pro units.

The 4TB 850 Pro is the first 4TB 2-bit MLC SSD on the market. This capacity is possible thanks to 48-layer V-NAND technology. So far it’s not been confirmed that Samsung is using 48-layer V-NAND on an upcoming 4TB 850 Pro. Nevertheless there are some factors indicating that this is exactly what’s going to be done. Checking where the specifications of the 850 Evo 2TB and 4TB differ we find that on the 4TB drive Samsung is using 48-layer V-NAND. Since the number of layers used are the same, no matter whether you’re looking at EVO or PRO drives, we assume that they’ll also be the same in the case of the 4TB models.

Compared to the 850 Evo the Pro will offer supreme longevity and apart from that it can be expected that the 850 Pro is also a little bit faster. Apparently the price of the Pro will be significantly higher. Checking on Geizhals.at we find the 850 Evo 2TB listed at 636 Euro, while the 4TB 850 Evo costs 1365 Euro. Considering that the 850 Pro 2TB costs about 865 Euro, we’d expect the 850 Pro 4TB to sell for 1860 Euro assuming the price differences are going to be similar to the smaller models.
