It appears that NVMe SSDs are getting cheaper by the day and it won't be long before consumer NVMe SSDs are actually cheaper than SATA interface SSDs, as this is already happening in the mainstream enterprise market.
According to a report from Servethehome.com, some NVMe SSDs are actually cheaper than the same SATA interface SSDs. In the mainstream enterprise market, the Intel DCP3520 1.2TB SSD can be found for as low as US $616, while the same SATA SSD, Intel DC S3520 1.2TB, goes for around US $640.
While the price might be similar, the performance of the NVMe PCIe interface SSD is around three times higher.
The lower pricing can be attributed to the actual BOM cost, volume production as well as various competitive factors.
The same trend is expected to continue and SSD prices are expected to drop by the end of Q4 2016 and into the first half of 2017 where NVMe prices are expected to be significantly lower than SATA SSD prices.
This will also eventually transfer to the consumer SSD market as the volume production kicks in and these become more popular in the market.
