AMD gets US $293 million from China x86 joint venture

Custom chip for Chinese Government

While its Q1 FY 2016 financial report is not looking great with lower revenue, AMD managed to get US $293 million in cash from a joint venture that will make an x86 server chip for Chinese Government.

It does not come as a surprise that China wants both a custom chip and custom software for its government-funded institutions and the latest Joint Venture that AMD has created with THATIC (Tianjin Haiguang Advanced Technology Investment Co., Ltd.) will developer custom SoCs for the Chinese server market and fulfill all China needs.

AMD will license its x86 processor technology and several IPs (intellectual properties) related to the SoC design.

Unfortunately, AMD and THATIC did not provide any technical details regarding the new SoC, which is understandable considering that it is made for China government, but Forbes claims that China has Zen architecture in mind and this move should give AMD a decent boost in its next financial report.
