AMD Reddit AMA confirms Polaris GPU details

Coming in mid-2016

AMD held an AMA session over at Reddit yesterday and while it did not bring any new information, it did confirm some of the earlier rumors regarding AMD's upcoming products, including AMD Polaris GPU architecture as well as the upcoming Fury X2 graphics card.

While AMD Zen CPU architecture questions were off the table since the AMA (Ask Me Anything) session was held by AMD's Radeon Technologies Group, we did get some confirmation regarding previous rumors including that Polaris GPU is indeed based on 14nm GlobalFoundries manufacturing process and that they are on track of release in the middle of this year.

The Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 GPUs, as referred to in the AMA will support DisplayPort 1.3 standard, and double the performance per watt.

AMD also confirmed that the Fury X2 was delayed from the original Q4 2015 launch time frame in order "to better align with the market," or as rumored earlier, wait until virtual reality (VR) headsets become available, which is probably the market that AMD is aiming at with its new dual-GPU flagship graphics card.

While we still do not have a precise launch date for the Fury X2, AMD confirmed that the launch is on track so we should see it soon.

AMD also revealed a bit more details regarding next-generation APIs, like DirectX 12 and Vulkan, and support for it on AMD graphics cards. AMD noted that "there is no graphics architecture on the market today that is 100% compliant with everything DX12 or Vulkan have to offer," but some currently available graphics cards, like the Radeon HD 7970, are "compatible with the vast majority of the core specification" and should bring certain performance improvements.

In any case, AMD AMA at Reddit was rather interesting although it did not reveal any new information since both Polaris GPU architecture and any other upcoming AMD product are under strict NDA, but we at least heard that AMD RTG is on track with new products.
