Gigabyte has unveiled two new high-end socket AM3+ motherboards for AMD's FX-series CPUs, including the recently updated FX-8370 CPU with Wraith CPU cooler, the Gigabyte 990FX-Gaming and the Gigabyte 970-Gaming motherboard.
Aimed for the high-end market, the new 990FX-Gaming is part of Gigabyte's premium Gaming G1 product lineup and brings all the features seen earlier on the AMD 990FX lineup but also adds a couple of new features like the USB 3.1 ports, M.2 port as well as upgraded components and overclocking capabilities.
The Gigabyte 990FX-Gaming has a strong 10-phase VRM part, drawing power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, and even supports AMD's 220W FX-9000 series processors. The rest of the features include four memory slots with support for up to 64GB of DDR3-2400 memory, two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots wired to 990FX chipset and single PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slot, wired to SB950 southbridge and working at x4. It also comes with three additional PCI-Express x4 slots.
It also comes with standard six SATA 6Gbps ports and a new M.2 20Gbps slot, Gigabyte's AMP-UP on-board audio with 110dBA SNR Codec, TI Burr Brown OPA2134 user-replaceable OPAMP, ground-layer isolation and Nichicon Muse capacitors, Killer E2201 for networking, two USB 3.1 and four USB 3.0 ports, dual-UEFI BIOS and all other features that you would expect to find on a high-end motherboard.
The new Gigabyte 970-Gaming on the other hand lacks certain features but should be cheaper and quite capable if you are not looking to pair it up with AMD's FX-9000 series CPUs but rather go with something a bit more affordable, like the recently introduced FX-8370 CPU.
As it is based on a combination of AMD's 970 northbridge and SB950 southbridge, it only has 26 PCI-Express 2.0 lanes and comes with two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots working at x16, x4 or x8, x8, x4 mode. It also comes with two PCI-Express x1 slots and two legacy PCI slots.
On the other hand it also comes with M.2 10Gbps slot has the same six SATA 6Gbps ports, four DDR3-2400 memory slots with support for up 64GB of memory.
It also features Gigabyte's high-end AMP-UP audio and Killer E2201 networking as well as two USB 3.1 ports (type-C and Type-A), couple of USB 3.1 ports and plenty of USB 2.0 ports.
