AMD has announced its new FirePro series graphics cards that will offer the world's first hardware-virtualized GPU product line, the FirePro S7150 and the S7150 X2.
Based on AMD's Multiuser GPU (MxGPU) technology, these new FirePro graphics cards will provide virtualized GPU resources for remote workstations, cloud computing and gaming as well as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
In a current virtualization system, some key components like the CPU, network controller and storage devices are virtualized on a hardware level in order to provide optimal user experience but GPU was usually not hardware virtualized. Thanks th tnew new AMD MxGPU technology, GPU hardware can achieve the same level of virtualization offering consistent performance and enhanced security across virtual machines.
The AMD MxGPU technology is based on SR IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization), which is a PCI Express standard and deliver hardware GPU scheduling logic with high-precision quality of service to the user, preserves the data integrity of Virtualized Machines (VM) and their application data through hardware-enforced memory isolation logic preventing one VM from being able to access another VM's data and exposes all graphics functionality of the GPU to applications for full virtualization support including DirectX, OpenGL and OpenCL.
The AMD FirePro S7150 is based on AMD's 28nm Tonga XT GPU, packs 2048 Stream Processors and 8GB of GDDR5 memory on a 256-bit memory interface. It has a TDP of 150W and is powered by a single 8-pin power connector. In terms of virtualization, the FirePro S7150 supports up to 16 users (per card) and will be available in both passive and active cooling versions.
The AMD FirePro S7150 X2, as the name suggests, is based on two Tonga GPUs, have 2048 Stream Processors per GPU, for a total of 4096, and has 16GB of GDDR5 VRAM, 8GB per GPU. The TDP is set at 265W and it will only be available in a passive cooling version. As expected, it supports up to 32 users in a virtualized environment.
The AMD FirePro S7150 will be priced at US $2399 while the FirePro S7150 X2 will have a US $3999 price tag. Both new GPU hardware virtualization FirePro graphics cards are expected to be available sometime in the first half of this year.
