AMD Fury X pump whining detailed analysis

Sealing has not been done properly

Anddill, a user at 3DCenter forums has decided to take the cooler of his Fury X card apart completely, since he wanted to know exactly what was causing the whining noise himself. His pictures and findings are rather interesting.

Initially "Anddill" wanted to write a how to guide on silencing the pump AMD is using on their Fury X cards. After having taken it apart he noticed that the whole undertaking was quite a bit more complex than what he assumed before doing so. He then changed his mind and took a few pictures and explained, rather precisely, what's causing the unwanted noise.

First of all we can see that there are soldering points touching the pumps enclosure. In combination with the vibration coming from the pump this acts like an amplifier. Basically you could place some noise dampening material here to get rid of the buzzing. Having the pump enclosure already opened "Anddill" continued even further, removing the PCB from the pumps motor. Once removed, there are several cavities visible, showing that the sealing has not been done properly. There are also coils visible, which appear to no be cleanly wound. This would not have any effect if the sealing was done neatly.

"Anddill" now wants to properly seal the pump using acid-free silicone and we're quite sure he'll be reporting his future findings. Apart from that, what "Anddill" is writing is congruent with AMDs response on this topic, that better bonding of the pump to its case will remove the disturbing noise.

If you plan on doing opening your card as well, it would be a significant advantage if your a very skilled users. If otherwise the risk is high that you damage the pump and apparently you're losing the warranty on the product.
