Although Intel showed its Compute Stick back in January, during Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas, now it has been seen listed in Europe, in both Linux and Windows 8.1 versions.
In case you missed it back then, the Intel Compute Stick is pretty much a HDMI dongle based on Intel Bay Trail Atom SoC. It packs Intel Atom Z3735F SoC clocked at 1.33GHz and also comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of integrated storage. While it might sound a bit underpowered, bear in mind that this is pretty much what any average office user needs.
It also features one USB 2.0 port, one micro-USB port for power, microSD slot for additional storage and integrated 802.11bgn WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. Of course, it comes with HDMI output that lets you plug it in any monitor or TV for that matter.
According to current listings, the Intel Compute Stick will be available in two versions, based on Linux or Windows 8.1 Bing Edition OS. The Bing Edition version will be the pricier one, currently listed at €180 while the Linux version is currently listed at around €120. We still dont know which Linux distribution did Intel pick but Ubuntu is most likely suspect.
There are plenty of similar products coming from Chinese market and priced at around US $100, or €180 for the Windows 8.1 Bing Edition based Intel Compute Stick, this sounds like a perfect office system or your backup travel computer, something that plenty of users need. Of course, this is not something for a power user, but still it is a nice little system.
The Intel Compute Stick is expected to be available sometime in mid-April.
