Despite earlier strong growth of the PC market, IDC has lowered its PC shipment expectations and forecast for 2015.
According to IDC, economic and product changes are to blame and the market research firm now expects worldwide shipments to fall by 4.9 percent this year, which is a significant change from previous expectations.
While total PC shipments in 2014 were at 308.1 million, spreading to 174.3 million on the portable and 133.8 million on the desktop market, the estimated total PC shipments for this year are set at 293.1 million units, which is a 4.9 percent drop. The biggest drop is expected in desktop PC shipments which should drop by 6.2 percent while portable market should take a hit of 3.9 percent.
The biggest drop was in emerging markets while mature markets did not do that bad. Earlier this month,
Intel has lowered its Q1 revenue estimate and it is obvious that PC market will not do as well as everyone expected this year.
IDC also expects the market to level off by 2019 with expected rise in portable PC shipments and only a slight drop in total PC shipments estimated at 291.4 million units.
