Last night, during its special Made to Game event held at Game Developers Conference 2015 in San Francisco, Nvidia has unveiled the new Shield console based on Android TV OS and its Tegra X1 SoC.
Describing it as a three-in-one device that support 4K video output at 60Hz, gaming device and a supercomputer, the new Shield console is definitely an impressive little system. Based on a well known Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC with 64-bit octa-core CPU part and Maxwell-based GPU with 256-cores, the little Shield console or set-top box, whatever you want to call it, packs quite a punch, as Nvidia keenly demonstrated last night.
The 130x210x25mm aluminum design Shield console also feature 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0 output, two USB 3.0 and micro-USB 2.0 ports, microSD card slto and IR receiver.
Showing that it it is not all about 4K video content, Nvidia also noted that its Shield console more than twice as powerful as the Xbox 360 and uses just 1/5 of the power, or around 5W to 20W according to Nvidia.
To make a point, Nvidia has promised more than 50 Android game titles for Shield console and has previewed some of them during the presentation, including Doom 3: BFG Edition, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and The Talos Principle games. It also made sure to show that the game can also run Crytek's Crysis 3.
While Android games might be nice, these are still far away from current and upcoming graphics demanding game titles but with Nvidia GRID, which will launch as game-streaming subscription based service, the Shield console is able to play some of the latest and upcoming game titles as well, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GRID 2, and more, as we were able to see during the last night presentation.
Nvidia has also unveiled a few accessories for the Shield, including the stand, remote control and the well known Shield Controller, which will be bundled with the Shield.
Nvidia will launch the Shield in May alongside its Nvidia GRID game-streaming service and it will cost US $199 with Shield Controller.
