AMD R9 380 series is based on Grenada GPU

Refined Hawaii GPU

The latest set of rumors regarding AMD's upcoming Radeon R9 300 series suggest that the Radeon R9 380 series will actually be based on Grenada GPU, a refined version of the well known 28nm Hawaii GPU.

According to the new report coming from 3DCenter.org, the upcoming Radeon R9 380 series graphics cards, the R9 380 and the R9 380X, will actually be based on the Grenada GPU, which is pretty much a refined version of the well known Hawaii GPU, which is behind AMD's Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X graphics cards.

The Grenada GPU will also have the same specifications as the Hawaii GPU, packing 2816 GCN 1.1 Stream Processors, 176 TMUs, 64 ROPs and a 512-bit memory interface paired up with 4GB of GDDR5 memory, The new Grenada GPU will probably end up with some new features as well as increased clocks, which should allow better competition with Nvidia's Geforce GTX 970 and GTX 980 graphics cards. Hopefully, AMD will allow its AIB partners to come up with non-reference designs from day one, or at least come up with a good reference cooler.

The same report also suggest that the Tonga GPU could be the main GPU behind the Radeon R9 370 series. Earlier rumors suggested that AMD also has a Tonga XT GPU, which packs 2048 GCN 1.3 Stream Processors, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs and a 384-bit memory interface, and exactly this GPU, could be the one behind the upcoming Radeon R9 370 series.

The only true next-generation GPU is the earlier detailed Fiji GPU. This one will end up as AMD's Radeon R9 390 high-end graphics card series and probably the one behind AMD's upcoming dual-GPU R9 390X2 graphics card. Based on GCN 1.3 architecture, the 28nm Fiji GPU is rumored to pack 4096 Stream Processors, 256 TMUs, 128 ROPs and be paired up with 4GB of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) which should provide 640GB/s of memory bandwidth.

In any case, AMD has confirmed that it is putting the finishing touches on its Radeon R9 300 series and earlier this year, during financial call, AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, confirmed that AMD is preparing a graphics refresh for Q2 2015, so we will not have to wait long for some official specifications and announcements.
