According to the latest report, it appears that Samsung might be the one that will be making 14nm FinFET chips for Nvidia, Qualcomm and Apple.
There have been quite a few shifts on the manufacturing scene and with TSMC experiencing delays, Samsung might end up to be the one that will actually make chips on 14nm FinFET manufacturing process for Nvidia, as well as both Qualcomm and Apple, according to
a new report from BusinessKorea.co.kr.
According to recent rumors, Samsung has managed to achieve a significant breakthrough that allowed them to both increase yields as well as reduce the manufacturing cost, which is quite important. This situation has put Samsung ahead of big players, including TSMC that has suffered some extensive delays. Qualcomm has reportedly canceled 16nm FinFET production at TSMC few weeks ago and is now switching to Samsung's 14nm manufacturing process.
While Nvidia and Samsung are currently tangled in a recent patent infringement lawsuit, it was announced that the company will go for TSMC and its 16nm FinFET manufacturing process, but as always, Nvidia might be switching to Samsung as well since it is the smart business decision. As always, Samsung will also supply chips to Apple, its main rival in the smartphone business so it does make sense that the company would do the same for Nvidia as well.
While it is still not certain if Nvidia will use Samsung's 14nm FinFET manufacturing process for next-generation GPUs or will it actually be reserved for Nvidia's next-generation Tegra, but one thing is clear, Samsung might become the most important chip manufacturer with its 14nm FinFET process.
