HGST, a subsidiary of Western Digital, has announced that it has started to ship its new 8TB Ultrastar He8 Helium filled HDD and that the 10TB version of the same drive has started sampling to clients. Late last year, HGST has launched first Helium filled HDD with 6TB capacity.
According to HGST, the Helium filled He8 series are the best choice HDDs due to their high-capacity, high-reliability and performance. Using the new HelioSeal technology, these new HDDs will be a cornerstone of any future high-capacity HDDs from the company. According to HGST, the new Helium filled HDDs also feature significantly lower power consumption and obvious lower cooling requirements.
HGST currently has 6TB and 8TB Ultrastar He Helium filled HDDs in its portfolio and 10TB version is coming soon. According to HGST, the new 8TB He8 HDD delivers 33 percent more capacity and offers 23 percent lower idle power consumption and are actually 44 percent more power efficient (Watts/TB). To be available in both SATA 6Gbps and SAS 12Gbps interface versions, the new Ultrastar He8 enterprise HDDs will have 2 million MTBF and 5-year warranty.
Earlier this month, Seagate managed to beat HGST to the market by announcing its 8TB air-filled HDDs Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology and expects to create up to 20TB capacity HDDs by 2020 using that same technology.
It looks like HDDs will get bigger quite soon and hopefully price of these He8 high-capacity HDDs will not be too high.
