No 20nm from AMD until next year

Reported during Q2 2014 conference call

AMD's Lisa Su, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, noted during AMD's Q2 2014 conference call that 20nm products are coming next year.

While not disclosing any details regarding actual product details, Lisa Su noted that AMD will be shipping "products in 20nm next year" and that "FinFET is also important". The mentioned FinFET manufacturing process is the next generation 16nm manufacturing process which Nvidia briefly mentioned during its announcement of Parker based chips.

AMD's current plans is to replace its Beema tablet chips with Nolan, which should be the first product made with 20nm manufacturing process, but according to latest report, will not be ready before 2015. The move to next manufacturing process is the obvious path forward for many manufacturers but only when it offers higher performance and, most importantly, earns money in one way or the other.

Rory Read, AMD's current CEO, answered a direct question from John Pitzer, Credit Suisse guy, by saying that there is still a lot of life in 28nm manufacturing process and that we will see a mix of 28nm and 20nm products in future, at least when it comes to AMD.
