Hi guys

After the LN2 Smash and Trash last weekend, I've decided to do some more clocking
I'm basically an air only guy so I figure this is the time to do it. I'll follow up this post with current clocks settings benches etc and hope to use the thread to document my progress and also, hopefully, gain some more insight into clocking.
I intend to do some 'open window' clocking, that or I'll just move my rig to the balcony for optimal temps

My rig as is is:
3930k Cooled with a Noctua NH-D14
RIVE
16gb quad channel Ripjaw Z's 2133 CL9 - F3-17000CL9Q-16GBZH
6990+6970 in trifire
few misc SSD's
Corsair AX850

I currently have two legit win 7 installs, one on a 60gb SSD which is what I plan on using for benching.
I intend to also install XP there for some benches. I learnt on the weekend that XP is better for super pi?
If peoples are interested in helping me along, I'd be mucho happy about that

Bean

So, I spent most of last night tearing down my rig, Most of that time was spent trying to get the bloody dust out

Resized Image

Removing the heatsink I saw what every overclocker/PC builder absolutely loves: Excellent Heatsink to CPU contact.... derp

Resized Image

Once cleaned, I decided to have a look at those lovely discolourations I remember from that 5ghz on air I did once..
I assume I have in actual fact done some damage to my cpu, not sure though. Maybe someone can help me here?

After everything was semi clean, I arranged it all so beautifully on my desk that I felt the need to take a picture of it all..

All back together minus one 6990 and ready to rock and roll.

then I flashed to the latest bios and 'tried' to boot.
I ended up with only about an hour in bios, started from scratch and just tried to get a boot. Reminding myself of how nooby I truly am, of about 30 button presses, I got into Windoze no more than twice!

From here I decided it was important to remind myself (read: actually learn somethign) about this whole intel overclocking thing and how it works.
After googling for roughly 3 seconds, I came across this Overclocking guide
I'm sure many have seen it before, it's very useful and applies to the socket I am using.
I also consulted Christian Ney with regards to my ram and to find out roughly what I could achieve with it.
After I sent a few pictures to him, he told me it could be either BFR or CFR varients of Hynix chips. This, ofcourse, means nothing to me, so I had to push him a little harder
I ended up with one of Ocaholics reviews to look at which I could use as a 'rough' guide clicky for my own ram.
Also a rough formula to follow for timings
(X)-(X+2)-(X+1)
So, for CL9 I would be at
9-11-10
For CL10 I will have
10-12-11 so on and so forth.
This is something I can relate to and I hope to apply it when I get back to clocking in a day or two.

Now I'm at work and trying to slowly acquire the knowledge I'll need to get myself a decent overclock for 24/7 and also for benching, instead of that hack and slash overvolted 4.5ghz that I used to have.

Thanks for reading, and I'll try to keep this updated as I go along
