Samsung has positioned themselves as a power player in the consumer SSD market which really began with their very successful 830 Series drives. Recently they've released two versions of the new 840 Series - one for each the budget and enthusiast demographics. The 840 brings modest performance with outstanding power consumption while the 840 Pro brings top-shelf performance. Will the 840 Pro be able to bring it to edge out the OCZ Vector drive?

It seems that our relationship with Plextor has had a shot of Adrenaline since our meet at CES Las Vegas 2013 and ‘first up’ analysis of the new Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme SSD is the result. We did have a bit of a heads up when Plextor asked us to review the M5 Pro in this meeting, but definitely never expected the M5 Pro to arrive at our office, even before us, and not two weeks before this Xtreme we just finished testing! The Pro and the Extreme should be virtually identical, considering both contain the same controller, the same cache, same firmware and even 19nm NAND flash memory. The difference is that the Xtreme contains 16 modules of NAND flash memory vice the 8 of our M5 Pro review, the Xtreme also promising IOPS of 100,ooo. But wait…. didn’t we get that from the M5 Pro as well?

For years, there’s been a constant battle in the flash drive market where companies have tried to build the smallest drive possible but boast the most amount of space. In this regard, it has to be said that Kingston is the current winner. Its DT HyperX Predator isn’t much larger than a regular performance thumb drive, but its storage starts out at 512GB.

So, do Synology and QNAP finally have some fresh competition? We'd like to say yes. With the AS-604T NAS device, Asustor has created an outstanding first entry. The chassis is solid and attractive, the display is practical, and the firmware is very good for such a young company. Ok, here and there you can still notice a few rough edges, but generally speaking Asustor has created a very comprehensive product with lots of features and options. We also get the impression this is just the first we've seen from Asustor.

Portable storage as we know is one of those fundamental items that all of us need to have in our inventory somewhere, in some shape and form, and in the modern world we easily forget how much we rely on data. Alongside data, we are coming to terms with how much we rely on our smartphones and if we roll back just over ten years to when the likes of the Nokia 3330 came out with it revolutionary WAP access and compare that to now, we see just how much things have changed and how important data is on the go.

When it comes to performance the Patriot Supersonic Magnum 256GB is hands down the fastest USB 3.0 Flash drive that we have ever seen when it comes to the synthetic benchmark results. Seeing sequential read speeds of nearly 300MB/s and 180MB/s write is very impressive...

Samsung’s Series 840 SSDs offer great value for your money, but they use the relatively new TLC type of memory chips. These have a shorter lifespan than the more commonly used MLC chips, but how much shorter exactly? Samsung of course has full confidence in the longevity of their Series 840 SSDs, but there really is only one way to find out just how long buyers can expect a TLC-equipped drive to function: by testing the hell out of it.

The Intel 335 Series is known as 'That Intel Drive with 20nm Flash', but it's so much more. The 180GB capacity size gives you comfort room with Windows 8 and does very well in our power test.
