If you plan on using a dedicated graphics card, the FX-8350, FX-8320 and FX-6300 aren't bad options. With Intel you get an integrated GPU that you pay for but don't use if you have a separate graphics card. In the AMD FX processors every single transistor is used by the CPU, which clearly has a positive effect with multi-threaded software. Don't get us wrong, Intel still makes the world's fastest processor and AMD can't even get close. But if you have a dedicated video card, then the new AMD FX processors give you a lot of bang for your buck.

For those of you not aware, the new “Piledriver” based processors are the next evolution of the FX-series from the previous “Bulldozer” based processors. Unfortunately, the “Bulldozer” release was met with quite a bit of constructive criticism, as the hype and pre-release detail left a lot of folks underwhelmed. So, the immediate upside for AMD this go around is many people will be going into this release with more realistic expectations. However, the obvious questions still loom, are the “Piledriver” based processors worth a look and more importantly your money? Let’s dive in and find out.

Nobody buys a CPU with unlocked multipliers to run it at stock frequencies, which you will see inside the many reviews around the web today. So what happens when you pit the flagship architectures together near the edge of conventional air and water cooling, Vishera FX ($199) vs Ivy Bridge ($329), at 4.8GHz? Which one will the discerning gamer choose?

AMD introduced its new FX-series processors almost exactly a year ago, and AMD enthusiasts hoped these Zambezi CPUs, built on AMD's new Bulldozer architecture, would provide real competition to Intel's Sandy Bridge line. But although the FX-8150 had eight integer cores and was capable of high clock speeds, its high price and poor performance at the individual core level meant that it wasn't very competitive with the equivalent Intel CPUs. Now we have the AMD FX-8350 CPU, code-named Vishera and based on the Piledriver architecture to test. Has AMD managed to reduce the performance deficit relative to Intel? Let's find out.

Now a year on from the FX-8150 launch AMD are back with a revision of their performance orientated CPUs. The new FX-8350 revises the cores used and bumps up the speed for a product which again is designed to maximise price and performance for those looking to spend about $199 on a chip. We will be taking a look at the new chip in a selection of real world and synthetic tests against the FX-8150 and i5-3570K along with a look at the benefits of AMDs recently launched 12.11 beta driver which promises much improved 7000 series performance.
