Gigabyte introduces GeForce GTX 1080 Rock Edition

Equipped with WindForce 3X cooler

Gigabyte already has a wide portfolio when it comes to graphics cards but nevertheless they’ve shown yet another model, which goes by the name “Rock Edition” and it features a WindForce 3X cooler.

The WindForce 3X cooler has been used on most of Gigabyte high-end GTX 980 and 980 Ti graphics cards. One of the best features about it was that it featured standard height or in other words that it was only marginally taller than your usual reference cooler. This really helped with compatibility compared to what other vendors were and are doing. Apart from that the whole RGB thing used to be absent on these coolers as well, which it is on the Rock Edition too.

Having a closer look at the specs we see that the GeForce GTX 1080 Rock Edition comes factory-overclocked to 1632MHz/1771MHz Core/Boost clocks, while the GTX 1080 Founders Edition works at 1607MHz/1733MHz Core/Boost frequencies. This is only a tiny factory OC, yet it’s better to get a card with a little overclock than none at all.

Although the card is based on the same custom PCB as the of WindForce OC models, the Rock Edition has only been equipped with one 8-pin PCIe power connector. When it comes to outlets we find the usual three DisplayPorts 1.4, one HDMI 2.0b connector and one dual-link DVI port.

So far there are no details regarding pricing and availability. Nevertheless we believe that this model is going to be aggressively priced. Considering that there is basically an old cooler and a cut-down version of Gigabyte custom PCB as well as a tiny factory overclock, this appears very much likely to us.
