During the past week-end a rather interesting CPU appeared on eBay for sale. We're talking about an upcoming 18/36 core/thread Xeon E5-2600 v4 processor, which is actually a yet to be launched Broadwell-EP CPU.
What's maybe most interesting to see is the price tag of $999 US. If this is a hint towards pricing of the upcoming Xeon CPUs - although we highly doubt that - the server CPUs could become very interesting to high-end desktop users as well. But as we said, we really don't believe Intel is going to launch an 18 core, 36 thread Xeon CPU and then sell it for $999 US, since it would be almost a third of what todays comparable chip costs.
Also interesting to look at are the performance results provided in the pictures on eBay. There you can see that the seller appears to not only have an 18 core, 36 thread CPU at hand but also a 22 core, 44 thread model. Running Cinebench R15, which scales very nicely with increasing core count you can see that the Xeon E5-2696 v4 with 22 cores and 44 Threads is able to perform the task at hand quite a bit faster than the former flagship Xeon E5-2699 v3, which features 18 cores and 36 threads. The other upcoming Xeon E5-2600 v4 series CPU, which is actually a 18C/36T chip is most likely going to be, is a little bit slower than todays flagship (E5-2699). The reason for that appears to be the clock speed, since the E5-2699 clocks 100 MHz higher than the E5-2600 v4 Engineering Sample.
At this point we also want to quickly revisit the specs of the the new Broadwell-EP based Xeon CPUs. The Xeon E5-2600 v4 ES features 18 cores and 36 threads, a standard clock of 2.2 GHz and a turbo clock of 3.6 GHz. Apart from that there is 45 MB of L3 cache and the TDP is rated at 145W. When it comes to the Xeon E5-2699 v4, then we're talking about a 22 core, 44 thread part with 2.2 GHz standard and 3.6 GHz turbo clock. Furthermore there are 55 MB of L3 cache and the TDP is also rated at 145W. All upcoming Broadwell-EP processors are going to be manufactured using 14nm process technology.
